Agency vs In-House
One of the biggest career decisions in marketing is whether to work agency-side or in-house. Here's how they compare across the areas that matter most.
Culture & Pace
Fast-paced, deadline-driven, high variety. You'll work across multiple brands and sectors simultaneously.
Deeper focus on one brand, steadier pace. You'll build long-term strategy and see the results compound over time.
Career Progression
Rapid progression possible, AE to AD in 4-5 years. Titles come faster but can plateau without moving agencies.
Slower, more structured progression tied to business cycles. Broader scope at senior levels with P&L responsibility.
Skills You Build
Breadth: pitching, client management, multi-sector expertise, speed of output, creative problem-solving under pressure.
Depth: brand ownership, stakeholder management, budget control, cross-functional influence, commercial awareness.
Work-Life Balance
Can be demanding, late nights during pitches or launches. Compensated by energy, social culture, and variety.
Generally more predictable hours and benefits. Better suited if you value routine and long-term project ownership.
Salary & Benefits
Salaries can start lower but progress fast with promotions. Perks vary, smaller agencies may offer less.
Often higher base salaries, better benefits (pension, bonus, shares). More stability but fewer rapid pay jumps.
Typical Transition
Many professionals move in-house after 5-8 years to take a senior brand-side role with more strategic influence.
Some move to agency to broaden experience or into consulting. Others move laterally across industries for growth.
