The "Greener Grass" Audit: Strategy over Impulse

Let's elevate your career! Weekly advice to energise and elevate your job search and career - the tips & tricks recruiters don't want you to know.

I want to build on something I’m seeing repeatedly across my conversations with senior talent in London, comms, transformation and HR.

People are busy. People are capable. People are moving.

…but they are not always progressing.

I call this The Velocity Trap , and it’s more dangerous in 2026 than ever before.

Because the market isn’t rewarding effort anymore. It’s rewarding alignment .

The Real Shift: It’s Not About Where You Work, It’s How You Operate

We’ve been conditioned to think in binaries:

    Agency vs In-house

    Corporate vs Startup

    Stability vs Growth

    But that’s surface-level thinking.

    What actually matters is:

Does your way of working match the system you’re stepping into?

Does your way of working match the system you’re stepping into?

    Think of it like this:

Agency = speed, ambiguity, client service, breadth

    In-house = depth, stakeholder management, long-term ownership

Startup = pace, scrappiness, AI leverage, output over process

Consultancy = structure, frameworks, commercial thinking

When you move between these without adjusting your operating system … friction happens.

    And that’s where careers stall.

Scenario 1: The “Generalist in a Specialist Market”

    The Reality

You’ve built a strong, varied career. You’ve done strategy, delivery, stakeholder management.

    You’re commercially aware. You’re capable.

    But you’re not landing interviews.

    The Problem (What’s Actually Happening)

The market isn’t rejecting your experience.

It’s struggling to categorise you quickly .

In-house hiring (especially in transformation, HR, comms) is increasingly built around clear capability gaps .

They’re not thinking: "Who is well-rounded?"

They’re thinking: "Who solves this exact problem?"

    The Strategic Pivot

    Stop positioning yourself as:

“I’ve done a bit of everything”

“I’ve done a bit of everything”

    Start positioning yourself as:

“I specialise in connecting X to Y to deliver Z”

“I specialise in connecting X to Y to deliver Z”

    The Move

You become a translator of value , not a collector of experience.

    Examples:

“I bridge internal comms and transformation to drive adoption in complex change environments”

“I translate HR strategy into measurable business outcomes across global teams”

    Practical Step

Use ChatGPT to refine your positioning:

    Prompt:

“Based on this CV, position me as a specialist in [target area] for [industry] roles. Make it commercially strong.”

“Based on this CV, position me as a specialist in [target area] for [industry] roles. Make it commercially strong.”

Then test it against 5 job descriptions.

If it doesn’t clearly match refine again.

Scenario 2: The “Legacy Leader” Entering an AI-Native World

    The Reality

You’ve built credibility. You’ve led teams. You’ve delivered at scale.

Now you’re looking at startups, scale-ups, or more agile environments.

    The Problem

You’re being perceived (fairly or unfairly) as:

    Process-heavy

    Expensive overhead

    Slow to execute

    In a world where:

Speed + AI leverage = competitive advantage

Speed + AI leverage = competitive advantage

    The Strategic Pivot

    You are not selling experience.

    You are selling leverage .

    The Move

    You need to demonstrate:

“Because of my experience, I move faster, not slower.”

“Because of my experience, I move faster, not slower.”

    Practical Example

    Instead of saying:

    “I’ve led large transformation programmes”

    Say:

“I use AI tools to reduce content production and stakeholder reporting time by 30, 50%, allowing teams to focus on strategic delivery”

    Tools That Support This

ChatGPT → automate drafting, analysis, comms

Perplexity AI → rapid research and insight

Notion → structured execution and visibility

If you’re not actively using these, you’re not just behind on tools…

You’re behind on how work gets done .

Scenario 3: The “Internal Glass Ceiling”

    The Reality

You’ve got stability. You’ve got credibility internally. You’re trusted.

    But…

    You’re no longer stretched.

And deep down, you know it.

    The Risk

This is the most dangerous place to sit.

Because it feels comfortable, but it quietly erodes:

    Market relevance

    External visibility

    Confidence in your edge

    The Strategic Pivot

This is not about leaving immediately.

It’s about reintroducing challenge strategically .

    The Move

Instead of jumping back into agency chaos, look for:

Environments that combine intellectual stretch + structural maturity

Environments that combine intellectual stretch + structural maturity

This is where consultancy-style environments come in.

    Examples include:

    Accenture (Song)

    Deloitte (Digital)

    These offer:

    Strategic work

    Complex problem solving

    Less chaotic delivery models

    Practical Step

Before making a move, audit your current role:

    Ask yourself:

When was the last time I learned something new?

Am I building skills that increase my external value?

If I entered the market tomorrow, would I stand out?

If the answer is unclear, you’re already drifting.

    The BFF Thought Shift

Next time you look at a role, don’t ask:

    “Can I do this job?”

    “Can I do this job?”

    Ask:

“Does this environment allow me to operate at my best?”

“Does this environment allow me to operate at my best?”

Because the wrong environment will make a strong professional look average.

And the right one will accelerate you faster than any CV tweak ever could.

    Your 3-Step Strategic Reset

If this resonates, here’s where to start:

    1. Define Your Operating System

Are you a builder, scaler, optimiser, or translator?

Where do you create the most value?

    2. Align Your Narrative

Does your CV and LinkedIn reflect that clearly?

Or are you still telling a chronological story instead of a strategic one?

    Use LinkedIn intentionally, not passively.

    3. Pressure Test Your Next Move

    Before applying:

    Research the company properly

    Understand how they operate

Identify where you fit (or don’t)

    If you can’t answer that…

You’re not ready to apply yet.

If You Want to Go Deeper

This is the work I do with my clients.

    Not surface-level CV edits, but:

    Market positioning

    Strategic pivots

    Commercial alignment

    Confidence in direction

If you’re at that point where:

“I know I need to move… but I want to do it properly this time”

“I know I need to move… but I want to do it properly this time”
