Why Positivity, Proactivity and Accountability Are Your Superpowers in the Job Search
When you're in the middle of a job search, it's easy to feel like so much is out of your control, and to be fair, some of it is. Market conditions shift, hiring processes can drag on, and rejections (or worse, ghosting) can feel relentless. But if there’s one thing you do have control over? Your mindset.
Mindset isn’t just a fluffy motivational buzzword, it’s one of the most powerful tools you can bring to your job search. A positive, proactive, and accountable mindset can set you apart just as much as your CV or experience.
Let’s explore why mindset matters more than ever right now, and how you can harness it to your advantage.
First, a quick look at today’s market
The UK job market in 2024 has been unpredictable. According to the Office for National Statistics , unemployment in early 2024 rose to 4.2%, with redundancies increasing and job competition intensifying, particularly in sectors like marketing, media and tech. At the same time, the number of job vacancies dropped slightly, sitting around 908,000 as of the latest data, compared to over 1 million at its post-pandemic peak.
That means more people are applying for fewer roles. In fact, Reed.co.uk recently reported that the average number of applications per role has risen by up to 38% year-on-year in some industries.
It’s a tough climate, and that’s exactly why mindset matters.
Why mindset is the game-changer
When you're up against dozens (or even hundreds) of other applicants, the way you approach your job search can make all the difference.
Here’s why:
1. Positivity fuels resilience
Research from the University of London found that job seekers who maintained a positive attitude were twice as likely to stay consistent with their job search activities over time. That consistency is key, because, let’s be honest, the job hunt is rarely a straight line.
Positivity doesn’t mean pretending everything’s great when it’s not, it means choosing to believe in your future potential, even when your inbox is full of "unfortunately" emails.
2. Proactivity builds momentum
In a crowded market, waiting passively for the right job ad to appear simply isn’t enough. Being proactive, networking, reaching out to decision-makers, creating and sharing content, attending events, often leads to opportunities that aren’t even publicly advertised.
In fact, around 60, 70% of roles in the UK are filled through the hidden job market, i.e., jobs filled through referrals, recommendations or internal moves, rather than job boards. If you’re only relying on applications, you’re potentially missing out on most of the available roles.
3. Accountability = growth
It’s natural to feel frustrated when you’re not hearing back. But constantly blaming the system, the recruiter, or “the market” doesn’t move you forward. The most successful job seekers ask themselves:
“What’s in my control here? What can I improve?”
“What’s in my control here? What can I improve?”
That self-reflection often leads to sharper CVs, more strategic applications, better interview technique, and ultimately, more offers.
Mindset shifts that make a big impact
Here are a few common traps I see job seekers fall into, and the mindset shifts that can help turn things around:
Instead of thinking...Try shifting to...“There are no jobs out there.”“Where else could I be looking that I haven’t yet explored?”“They probably hired someone internally.”“How can I position myself as the standout external candidate?”“I never hear back, what’s the point?”“Each application is a chance to refine my approach.”“It’s just bad luck.”“What can I do differently this week to create better luck?”
Your Recruitment BFF’s mindset checklist
Here’s a quick reminder of the small mindset habits that can lead to big results over time, ones I’ve shared with you throughout this journey:
Show up consistently, even when it’s hard
Reach out to people before there’s a job to apply for
Say yes to opportunities to speak, present, collaborate or attend events
Share your expertise on LinkedIn, even if it’s just once a week
Keep a wins journal to remind yourself how far you’ve come
Ask for feedback instead of fearing it
Let go of perfection, progress matters more
Don’t wait until you feel “ready”, take the leap anyway
Final thoughts: Your mindset is your strategy
This isn’t about toxic positivity. You’re allowed to feel disappointed, frustrated or burnt out, it’s human. But how you respond to those feelings will shape your results.
If you’re showing up, staying open-minded, actively learning, and refusing to make excuses, then you're already ahead of the curve. In a tough market, mindset isn’t a soft skill, it’s a strategic advantage.
Keep going. You're doing better than you think.
