    Hello Career Elevators!

Are you starting to question why on earth are you constantly being rejected at application stage for a job you could do in your sleep?! You are certainly not alone. Job rejection can be disheartening, but it’s important to remember that it often isn’t a reflection of your abilities. There are several factors at play, both from the candidate’s and the recruiter’s perspectives, that influence why applications are rejected at the very first stage. Let’s take a closer look, backed by some eye-opening stats about the current job market.

From the Candidate’s Side: Understanding the Struggles

The Resume Black Hole Did you know that recruiters spend only around 6-10 seconds reviewing a CV in their initial scan? Unfortunately, that means many CVs don’t make it past this first step. According to Jobvite , only about 2% of applicants make it to the interview stage after this first review.

Lack of Tailoring Many candidates make the mistake of sending out the same CV for multiple applications. However, this approach is rarely effective. According to LinkedIn , 67% of employers prefer candidates who tailor their CV to fit the specific role. It’s clear that recruiters want to see how your skills directly align with the job requirements.

Skills Mismatch A significant number of candidates face rejection due to a mismatch in skills. In fact, Glassdoor found that 61% of applicants are turned away for not meeting the core qualifications of the job. In a competitive job market where over 32,000 vacancies are being advertised in the tech sector alone in the UK (as of late 2024, according to Tech Nation ), employers are looking for candidates whose skills and experience closely align with their needs.

Overqualification You may think that applying for a higher-level position could give you an edge, but recruiters might see this as a red flag. Harvard Business Review states that hiring managers often worry overqualified candidates will leave the job once a better opportunity comes along.

From the Recruiter’s Side: What They’re Looking For

Now, let’s take a look at the other side of the coin. Recruiters are under significant pressure to fill roles as efficiently as possible, which shapes how they approach the candidate review process.

The Ideal Candidate Myth Employers often have a very clear vision of their "ideal" candidate. According to Glassdoor , 58% of candidates are rejected because they don’t fully match the ideal profile set out by the hiring manager. Even a minor gap in skills or experience can be enough to disqualify a candidate in the first round.

The ATS Factor Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) are used by over 90% of companies to screen CVs. These systems scan resumes for keywords and relevant experience before a human ever looks at them. If your CV doesn’t align with the ATS algorithms, it could end up being filtered out before reaching a recruiter’s desk.

Time Constraints With the volume of applicants, recruiters often have little time to review each CV thoroughly. Recruitment Circle reports that recruiters typically spend just 6-10 seconds reviewing a CV before deciding whether to move forward. With over 2.4 million active job seekers in the UK (based on recent data from the Office for National Statistics ), recruiters have a huge stack of CVs to get through, making quick decisions essential.

Cultural Fit Cultural fit is often just as important as qualifications. Gallup found that 62% of hiring managers prioritise cultural fit as much as, or more than, skills and experience. With so many candidates vying for the same positions, recruiters need to ensure that a candidate will integrate well into the team and align with the company’s values.

The New Recruitment Landscape: Networking, Personal Brand & Authenticity

In today’s recruitment market, it’s no longer just about applying to job adverts. Networking, personal branding, content creation, and being authentic have become just as, if not more, important in securing your next role. The way you present yourself online, from your LinkedIn profile to your personal website, blog, or social media presence, plays a huge role in your chances of success.

With job seekers and employers both going digital, showcasing your expertise and authenticity can help you stand out in a crowded market. According to Jobvite , 52% of recruiters now use social media to evaluate candidates, and 70% of job seekers find their roles through networking.

Here are a few tips I’ve shared before that you should keep in mind:

Leverage LinkedIn : Make sure your profile is up to date, professional, and reflects your personal brand. Share relevant content, engage with your network, and build connections in your industry.

Showcase Your Expertise : Start creating content that highlights your skills and insights. Whether it’s sharing articles, writing posts, or even publishing your own blog, sharing your expertise can make you stand out to employers.

Be Authentic : Authenticity matters now more than ever. Let your true self shine through in your job applications and online presence. Employers are looking for candidates who are genuine and passionate about their field.

Network, Network, Network : Build and nurture relationships within your industry. Networking, both online and offline, can open doors to opportunities that aren’t even listed on job boards.

Be Visible : Don’t just apply to jobs, put yourself out there! Attend industry events (virtually or in person), participate in discussions, and engage with your professional community.

The Bottom Line: It’s Not Always About You

Rejection is a tough part of the job search process, but it’s important to remember that it’s not always a reflection of your worth or abilities. There are many factors at play, from the sheer volume of applications to the complex processes recruiters use to make decisions.

If you’ve faced rejection, take a moment to reflect on your CV and application strategy. Are you tailoring your applications to match the role? Are you applying for positions that truly align with your strengths? Stay resilient, the right opportunity is out there, and finding the right fit is just a matter of time.
