Let's elevate your career! Weekly advice to energise and elevate your job search and career - the tips & tricks recruiters don't want you to know.

Let’s call it what it is.

The recruitment system isn’t just difficult right now…

    It’s structurally out of balance.

And if you’ve been feeling like:

“There are loads of jobs, but I’m not getting traction”

    “Processes feel rushed or inconsistent”

“I know I’m good enough, but I’m not getting the chance to show it”

You’re not alone, and more importantly, you’re not the problem.

What Actually Happened (The Data Behind the Shift)

Let’s zoom out for a second.

    2020, 2022: The Hiring Boom

Post-Covid, we saw one of the biggest hiring surges in recent history.

The UK saw record job vacancies of 1.3 million+ in 2022 (Office for National Statistics)

Digital, comms and transformation roles were among the fastest-growing

Companies were hiring ahead of demand , not just for it

    This created a market where:

Candidates had leverage Potential was valued Hiring was faster and more flexible

Candidates had leverage Potential was valued Hiring was faster and more flexible

    2023, 2025: The Correction

    Then reality hit.

Vacancies dropped by 30, 40% across multiple sectors

Tech layoffs alone impacted hundreds of thousands globally (Crunchbase tracking layoffs)

Many businesses froze hiring or reduced team sizes

    At the same time:

    Cost of living increased

    Economic uncertainty rose

    Fewer people moved roles voluntarily

    2026: The Imbalance

    Now we’re here:

More experienced candidates in the market Fewer roles available, especially mid-to-senior level

More experienced candidates in the market Fewer roles available, especially mid-to-senior level

In comms, digital and commercial roles specifically:

Hiring is more targeted and cautious

Roles are often multi-functional (2, 3 jobs in one)

Competition per role has significantly increased

The Uncomfortable Truth About Hiring Today

Here’s where it gets more frustrating.

    Many of the people hiring…

    Work in functions that require:

    Marketing

    Communication

    Storytelling

    Influence

…but struggle to apply those same principles to hiring.

What That Looks Like in Reality

Job descriptions that don’t clearly sell the role

Interview processes that don’t reflect the company brand

Candidates being assessed harshly with little context

    Limited feedback or engagement

    The Irony

The same companies that expect you to market yourself perfectly…

The same companies that expect you to market yourself perfectly…

Often don’t know how to market the opportunity properly.

And because the market is saturated…

    They don’t have to.

Which creates a lazy hiring dynamic :

    More filtering

    Less conversation

    Less investment in candidates

    What This Means for You

    You cannot rely on:

“A good CV will speak for itself”

“If I’m right, they’ll see it”

    “The process will be fair”

    Because right now…

The system rewards those who are best positioned , not just most capable.

The system rewards those who are best positioned , not just most capable.

The Shift: You Need to Play a Different Game

This is where you take control back.

    1. You Must Be Commercially Clear (Not Just Capable)

You are no longer competing on:

    Effort

    Experience length

    Brand names

    You are competing on:

How quickly someone understands your value

How quickly someone understands your value

    Practical Shift

    Your narrative should answer:

    What do you solve?

Who do you solve it for?

    What’s the measurable outcome?

    Example

    Instead of:

    “10 years in communications”

    “10 years in communications”

    Say:

“I help organisations land complex change by turning strategy into clear, engaging communication that drives adoption”

“I help organisations land complex change by turning strategy into clear, engaging communication that drives adoption”

    2. Conversations Are Scarce Treat Them Like Currency

You will get fewer opportunities to speak.

    So when you do:

    You need to be:

    Clear

    Confident

    Structured

    Human

    The Balance That Wins

Too many people lean one way:

    Overly polished → lacks personality

    Too relaxed → lacks impact

    You need both:

    Commercial clarity + human chemistry

    Commercial clarity + human chemistry

    3. Upskill Your “Career Skills” (This Is Where Most People Fall Short)

    Everyone focuses on:

    Courses

    Certifications

    Technical skills

    But ignores:

    Positioning

    Interview performance

    Storytelling

    Strategic networking

    This Is the Gap

    Because in this market:

Being good is not enough. You need to communicate that you’re good quickly and effectively.

Being good is not enough. You need to communicate that you’re good quickly and effectively.

    4. The ROI of Investing in Yourself

Let’s talk about something people avoid.

    Investment.

Most people hesitate to spend money on:

    Coaching

    CV support

    Interview prep

    But will spend months:

    Applying

    Second guessing

    Feeling stuck

    Losing confidence

    Let’s Reframe It

    What is the cost of:

3, 6 months of missed salary progression?

Staying in a role that’s not right?

    Repeated rejection cycles?

    A small, focused investment can:

    Save you time

    Reduce stress and uncertainty

    Increase your conversion rate

Get you into the right role faster

The right support doesn’t just “help” It accelerates outcomes.

The right support doesn’t just “help” It accelerates outcomes.

    The BFF Truth

The system isn’t designed to slow down and support you anymore.

    It’s designed to filter.

    So your job is to:

    Be clearer

    Be sharper

    Be more intentional

    Taking Back Control (Your Focus)

From here, your strategy is simple:

    1. Get Clear on Your Value

Know exactly what you bring and how to articulate it

    2. Increase Your Surface Area

More conversations More visibility More direct outreach

    3. Convert When It Counts

Be ready when the opportunity comes

    Because in this market:

You don’t need 20 opportunities. You need 3, 5 strong ones that you convert.

You don’t need 20 opportunities. You need 3, 5 strong ones that you convert.
